Can you help me figure this one out?

How is it that my boys struggle with spelling and multiplication tables but can effortlessly memorize entire Calvin and Hobbes books and Star Wars movies?

There's a trick to it. If you convince them that they are solving a mystery while doing their math problem so that they can help the national security whatever, they might go for it. Seriously, I've done it. Or, if they like building things, they need these certain numbers for the rest of the new moter they're building. The trick is to make the story sound real enough.
